The beginning of the 2007 Legislative Session found us opposing many of the bills froom the prior session.  These bills were no more than simple sound bites that had little factual basis behind them.  Click Here to read a guest opion article by Jane Egan, Executive Director of the Montana Society of the CPAs and Mary Whittinghill, President of the Montana Taxpayers Association.

The taxpayers of Montana once again were able to hold off on aggressive attempts by the Department of Revenue to radically change Montana tax code.  While we support giving the Department additional tools to review their compliance efforts, these bills were not necessary to enforce Montana tax code.

Perhaps the most troubling part of this continued barrage of bills by the department over the past two years is that most of them eminate from an out-of-state organization based in Washington, DC; the Multi State Tax Commission (MTC).

The voters in Montana did not elect the members of this Commission to represent the views of Montanans.  Our association believes tax policy should be the responsibility of our own elected officials - not some out-of-state bureaurocrats in DC.

An op-ed issued by Jane Egan, Executive Director of the Montana Society of CPas and Mary Whittinghill, President of the Montana Taxpayers Association expresses the ongoing concerns of their associations with the tax proposals and the misrepresentations on the necessity and fiscal impact of these bills.

Jane Egan, Executive Director of the Montana Society of CPAs also provided a commentary on the department's tax philosophy to Missoula Public Radio this May.
